Uncle Mort’s JP3 has been through a period of moodiness. Unwilling to get
going in the morning and developing a smoking habit.

Friday evening we arrived at the boat for a gentle weekend, with no particular
aims other than to give the motor a blast on low compression setting (more
later) and to wash the dust off the paintwork. Uncle Mort’s brasses are seldom
polished but the panels typically receive a good buffing with Autoglym’s best
at this time of year. But this summer there will be nothing more than a wash
and leathering, because a remedial “part paint job” is scheduled later in the
the year.

I could not resist a tickle of the starter motor on arrival . . . . just to
see in what kind of mood the JP was. It wasn’t. SMH builds an interlock into
the starter motor circuit including a relay to prevent starting when wired to
shore power and this is sometimes unreliable, preventing starting. Period.

It happened again . . . . and sooner or later our friendly neighbourhood
electrickery guru will be commissioned to remove the offending gadgetry.

The usual cure was effective. Tap everything, curse, plug in and unplug the
mains, wallop everything, shout, strut. Repeat the same with increasing bad
temper. Mrs B recognises the signs from the forward quarter, and then after 5
minutes, the JP fired up properly on all 3 cylinders from just one or two
rotations of the flywheel. It’s never run cleaner and never started more evenly
from cold. But it was still destined for the low compression excursion.
