ISTRT there was an experiment for creating power from a line of  
aerofoil-type devices strung together ('Nodding ducks' I think they were 
called)  between 
Flat Holm and Steep Holm islands. As the devices rocked on the water,  they 
operated internal generators and the power was fed by cable to the  shore.
 
Soon after the devices were put into the water, the power of the tidal  
currents destroyed them.
