For a while now, I have been saying that I would compile a page listing the deepest locks on the inland waterways system in England (not including tidal locks, which vary).
The page is now online at http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk/locks.htm I have had enormous difficulty finding this information out - even BW doesn't seem to know how deep its locks are! I have been out with a plumb line and tape measure to measure the fall on Anthony Lock (Rochdale) and the two Ashton locks that are on the list. Someone from BW measured Etruria top lock for me. I can find no official verification of the depth of Tardebigge top lock. Several sources give it as 14 ft, but the ever-faithful Nicholsons gives it as 11 ft! I don't suppose anyone in that vicinity is able to measure it or has any evidence for its fall? I would welcome any comments, especially if you think there are any omissions or errors. This new page accompanies my existing pages listing the longest canal tunnels and the highest canal summits. -- Martin Clark Internet Boaters' Database http://www.boaterweb.co.uk Pennine Waterways Website http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk
