John asked " Has anybody discovered how to connect to Broadband without a landline? "
It all depends on where you are and how much you want to spend. Some people use a satellite system similar to the one offered by Skymarket for £1300 set up plus £60 per month. Visit <http://www.skymarket.co.uk/internetaccess_satellitebroadband.php> for info. This is the fastest option I know of. If you are in the 3G coverage area for any of the major phone networks than you may be able to get a broadband(ish) service using a 3G datacard or suitably equipped handset. Also an enhancement of 3G entitled HSDPA has introduced faster data rates and is usually marketed at '3G broadband'. This is usually cheaper than the satellite system mentioned above but the areas covered are generally urban. OK if you like mooring in towns and cities. The majority of narrowboaters put up with a slower system (GPRS) which is available in a lot more locations on the UK canal system. The best rate for this service is on Orange using a PAYG SIM. They charge £1 per day (00:01 to 23:59) as an optional extra service. If you want to purchase a mobile phone data solution the Boaters Phone company <http://boatersphone.com/index.htm> will sell you a suitable solution and set it up for you. They also have a data club to keep people up to date with technology and price changes. Graham www.jannock.org.uk
