Having a small amount of experience of this sort of thing, (3 boats, 2 
people, down the Regent's) I don't think it makes a lot of difference (but 
this is only my uneducated opinion!) where you tie the other boat on. What 
it is important to remember is that the other boat is a big lump with its 
own momentum, so when approaching a lock one needs to start slowing down a 
lot earlier than with only one boat. That way, the other boat loses some of 
its momentum and is less likely  to pull the other one off course.
