The C&BN is surprisingly busy, especially  around Paper Mill Lock - mainly 
plastic but there are some  narrowboats.
 
When I was helping to move the dredger the other week (a barge that must be  
over 15 feet wide) it was fun watching the cruisers as they realised most of 
the  channel was blocked. They would head rapidly to the bank and there was a 
frantic  bit where everyone on board was holding onto whatever they could - 
reeds,  nettles, boat hook - to hold the boat as far as possible out of the way 
of this  leviathan. As the dredger could only safely move at about 1 mph, they 
had to  hang on for ages.
