The list also includes the Rideau Canal in Canada and four boat lifts on the
Canal du Centre, Belgium.

Contrary to what one might think UNESCO list is not necessarily a completely
objective selection of the most important pieces of canal heritage (and the
same point applies to railways).  Candidates have to be put up by the
country's government, and the whole thing is riddled with politicking about
development, aid, tourism, and many other factors. There can be little doubt
that Pontywotsit is one of the leading pieces of canal infrastructure in the
world, but that might not be enough for to get the world heritage status.
