Guinness was one of the major contributors to the success of the Irish Grand Canal, supplying much of its traffic and indeed taking its water from the canal. Guinness (to Limerick) was the last commercial cargo to be carried on the canal.
In recognition of this long-standing relationship, a presentation was recently made to Mr Arthur Guinness, the founder of the firm, at his residence at Oughterard graveyard near Ardclough on the Grand Canal. Photographs are on http://www.pbase.com/bjg/uncle_arthur. bjg
