But you have to have it loaded?...what do you do, turn your cooker on? :-)

If Earnest's batteries need charging and I feel the need to NOT have it in 
gear, then I normally turn on the Travelpower with either the 3kW immersion, 
or a 3kW fan heater, which, along with the 170A of alternators puts rather a 
load on the engine. This also gives you rather quick hot water or gets rid 
of damp.
