But what interests me is the extent to which Earnest
  differs from a "standard" design. This is something that the waterways
  magazines don't give half enough attention to in their reviews: they
  have lots of stuff about interior decoration, but very little about
  hull shapes, prop sizes and other aspects that would affect how well
  the boat actually works as a boat.

  I mean, I really don't care what the worktop is made of.

I entirely agree, but many of the boats reviewed are ordered by people 
who have never owned a boat before and the worktop is the only part of 
it they understand.
