Well, the worst that's going to happen is that you bump into the bank
or another boat. So that means the discussion comes down to that old
argument about whether narrowboating is a contact sport!

The last time I took a call whilst steering, I very quickly realised
it was a bad move. Picture the situation - returning to base at the
end of a holiday in a hire boat, nervously wondering if I'm about to
make a fool of myself in front of the owners. I had the boat perfectly
lined up for the final approach, speed just right, taking account of
the wind and everything, when the phone rang. In the couple of seconds
it took me to see who was calling and answer, the wind caught the bows
and sent them across the cut leaving me to make that humiliating
decision: do I back off and try again, or just throw a rope to the
waiting staff on the bank?

And the worst of it all was that the call was from the hire company,
wanting to know why we were 10 minutes late! "We were expecting you
back at 9.30 - how much longer are you going to be?" "About 30 seconds
- I'm just bringing it alongside now ... or I was, until you
distracted me!"

David.
