My recollection (though I don't have the references to hand) is that
following the GU upgrading between Braunston and Sampson Road, the
limiting width was a bridge in Tyseley or Small Heath, not far short of
the terminus of the wide-boat route. I think this was about 13 ft. I
wonder why it was not widened at the same time.

The often-quoted 12ft 6ins figure is more likely to be based on the
width of the two boats built to trial the upgraded route.

I have also read somewhere that the bridge two or three locks down from
the top of the Hatton flight is less than 14ft, although this was
reconstructed as part of the widening (presumably because the new locks
are not on the same alignment as the old route), and that narrow boats
which worked the flight breasted up would single out for this bridge.
However the Waterways Guides reference suggests you can do the whole
flight breasted.
