Umm. Were you turning it over with the compression levers
down? I'm not strong enough to do this on my PH2 (but
the namby-pamby starter motor is) so if I start it on
the handstart I raise the compression levers (they're linked
and both of them move at once), swing the engine as fast
as I can, and drop the levers at the relevant moment and
hope from some action from the engine. I have seen other
people dropping one lever at at time but that's not an 
option I have.

BTW if your back cabin stove is leaking I should get
it fixed ASAP as it could be leaking carbon monoxide.
