Could I add that another cause, slightly less frightening but also 
requiring an engine strip down, is rings where the gaps have moved into 
alignment?

If the level of blowback, and subsequent crankcase pressurisation, is 
not too high then I would certainly consider this as an option; another 
possibility might be that the rings fitted were not of the correct 
type/size - or  were fitted upside down, if they are shaped.

I wondered whether Terry had any warranty if the recent re-build was 
done commercially.
