Are you suggesting that we would only clear the tow path for special
events. Shame on you. The volunteers are out every week keeping the
canal in good condition. After all it is the only canal in the country
run by volunteers. If any one would like to help they should contact
Essex Waterways I'm certain they can find you some work even if it is
only cutting the grass on the tow-path.

Perish the thought Paul!
There is a contractor who mows 2-3 times a year. In addition, we volunteers
were out the week before the walk widening the towpath and cutting the grass
and overgrowth so the walkers didn't have any problems. Last week (after the
walk), for at least the second time we went to all the locks and
strimmed/flailed/mowed all the locks without a resident warden (and one that
has!). We also did a temporary repair to a slipped bank which we have to
revisit shortly to make a permanent(-ish) job of it.
The suggestion has been made that we take on regular mowing of the towpath and
that we do it every 2-3 weeks in the growing season; while we are at each lock
we hope to grease and paint the gates, etc, as well. Out of season it's minor
maintenance and making up landing-stage kits.
WRG working parties do wonderful work and demonstrate the skills that make them
so welcome. Colin, the Navigation Manager has a list of lots of tasks and
improvements that he and Roy Chandler would still like to see done.
We're proud of our Navigation and we want to make it the best in the Country
(BW? who they?). If anyone else wants to share our ideal we're always willing
to let them join us - it's only one or two days a week.
And it helps me keep my boating hand it when I'm not out on Aylestone - except
when I trap the handrail of the workboat under the handrail of the lock gate!
