I used to live in Hurst and I would walk my dog down the footpath by the Loddon.
One day I met a canoeist intrepidly wending his way down to Twyford (where AFAIK
there is a non-navigable weir (and where AFAIK again David Blagrove writes in
one
of his books that some fearless boater took a loaded pair to unload)).
The Loddon is a local river for local boaters. What was Mr Clarke doing there?

[The Loddon fishermen had (I moved away 11 years ago) had an unrivalled
reputation
for vileness. I once encountered a (if you're reading this over breakfast, look
away now)
pile of human dung with a copy of the Sun on it (the best use the Sun has ever
been
put to, without a doubt). Their piles of empty beer cans made the Sphinx look
like a
Dinky Toy.]
