I don't know.  In fairness, the real problem with the connection is  
the amount of c...@p that flows up and down the Parrett on every tide  
which would gum up the works of any form of lock without constant,  
and thus expensive, maintenance.  Plus the fact that the tidal range  
is big and the river thus navigationally challenging [i.e. visited by  
Chris Coburn but not the TNC].  There is now talk of a barrage  
downstream which would sort those problems out but, well, talk is  
cheap.  In any event Bridgwater Dock is now well filled with  
liveaboard narrowboats which never go anywhere - not even [for the  
most part] up the canal.
