THE INLAND WATERWAYS PROTECTION SOCIETY LTD

LOWER PEAK FOREST CANAL AND COMPSTALL NAVIGATION

SATURDAY 5TH DECEMBER 2009 9.30 PROMPT
START

Meet on the Car Park of Rose Hill Station , Marple not later than 9.15 fully
booted up
to catch the 9.30 train for Woodley where the walk will start. Buy a single
ticket.

Rose Hill Station is on the A626, 4 miles from Junction 27 of the M60. At
Marple turn
right just before the large Railway Pub and then sharp left after 100 yards for
the
Station Car Park. For those with SatNav Postcode is SK66 6EN. Make sure to go
to
Marple Rose Hill and not Marple Bridge.

For those coming from the Sheffield area best to take the usual often driven
route to
Bugsworth and continue on the Whaley Bridge By-Pass, and the A6 to Newtown
Traffic Lights. Sharp Right to next lights, turn left here up to the top of
the road and
then left to Marple. Pass Marple Locks on your left through three sets of
traffic lights
(the last set by a filling station). The Railway Pub will be on your left after
about half a
mile. Take care - the A6 is now 30 mph for most of the way between the By Pass
and
Newtown.

There will be a photo opportunity on the train for Marple Aqueduct.

We will then walk the Lower Peak Forest Canal through Woodley Tunnel (torches
would be useful) to Marple Aqueduct, then cross country to Compstall.

We will take lunch at the George Hotel ( Menu is included here) having advised
them
in advance to minimise delays. This is a Robinsons Pub with real ale. Other
food
venues are the Andrew Arms in Compstall and the Visitor Centre at the Etherow
Country Park.

After lunch we will walk the Compstall Navigation, then back to Marple Locks
via the
restored Iron Bridge to arrive at Top Lock House for mince pies with tea/coffee
or
mulled wine.

There is now an option. Walk back to Rose Hill Station which will take about 25
minutes or be ferried from Top Lock House back to the cars.
