The depths of the GU have nothing to do with the depths on the piling.
It just tells the dredger operator not to dig to deep! The original
depth is 5' 6", but I suspect even the deepest bits are now less.

Looking at some pictures of loaded Barlow's boats, it looks like there
was a good 4 foot draft on the South Oxford at least to Banbury in the
50's.
