Before I retired (for the second time) I used to get a lift from the wife of a friend of mine into work and caught the train home. In their wisdom SW trains changed their timetable and instead of a three minute wait at Aldershot for a change of train it became 30 minutes. So I did the logical thing and bought a second car. Instead of spending an hour and a half getting home I could get from desk to home in 35 minutes.
There's a great book called Global Warming and other B******s which contains some statistical analysis which points out that if we concreted over the railways and replaced trains with 60 seater coaches travelling say 90 miles per hour not only would most journey times be shorter but CO2 emissions( for those of the church of MMGW) would be lower. Public transport is great for crowded urban areas but doesn't work so well for most of us. Colin [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
