It may be apocryphal, but there was a tale of restoring the lock now
known as Colin P Whittock just below Stratford. It was realised that due
to ground conditions extra steelwork would be needed to stabilise the
walls. One of the cons borrowed a lorry, and came back a few hours later
with the steel superstructure which is there to this day.
