I hope the brains in this group are going to provide me with a good (and
relevant to my question!) answer here :-)
The diaphragm fuel pump on my Hyundai 2000 si petrol genny has split -
after only seven months in service (which seems a bit cr*ppy to me) and
I can't find a source of new diaphragms, only replacement pumps.
Now, I do know that' replacement', rather than 'repair', is the order of
the day but, if they only last seven months, then its going to end up
being very - expletive deleted - expensive over a few years :-(
Making a new diaphragm is well within my capabilities; when I learned my
trade as an apprentice( all those years ago) we made most of our
gaskets, joints (NOT 'spliffs'..lol..), seals - and even the occasional
diaphragm for the old petrol pumps in our cars .. but in those days
there were probably half a dozen local shops selling sheet material; so,
I've just spent most of the afternoon on the telephone, talking to
various guys who invariably said 'well, I remember when we used to hold
that sort of stuff *but* .. either <there's no demand today> or <we can
only stock the things that Head Office tell us to hold>' which was
really not a lot of help for me.
So, I'm stuck unless one of you guys, or gals, can suggest where I might
be able to buy a square foot, or two, of reinforced nitrile rubber sheet
(or anything else suitable, or better, for being immersed in unleaded
fuel) - which is about 0.3mm thick; the actual diaphragm has a maximum
diameter of 57mm - that's about 2ΒΌ inches in old money <g>.
As I needed to get the genny sorted, asap, I've just got up from the
barrel I'd been laid over and, very reluctantly, ordered a replacement
fuel pump - I'll chase up the warranty argument once it is sorted!
This is actually the second problem I've had in two weeks - the genny
ran poorly and then wouldn't start at all; investigation showed that the
spark plug cap, secured on the thread of the plug by a tiny spring clip,
had been vibrating and the wire clip had worn away the thread on one
side so that it no longer had anything to grip on to.. and eventually it
just fell off! This necessitated the purchase of a new plug as well as a
new cap.
Whilst checking *that* out I then discovered where the oil was seeping
from - it looks like the valve box cover gasket has failed as well (the
oil loss is not great, just enough to make a mess in the baseplate,
which then seeps out onto the deck through the openings). Its been like
that for at least four months I reckon, so I guess that Hyundai won't be
getting any 'highly recommended product' comments from *me* in the near
future :-(
