10am Saturday 10th April 2010 O.S. Map Landranger 139

We will start today's walk at Brownhills, West Midlands. Brownhills has
curious
parking, most of which has been commandeered by Tesco. There is a £70
charge enforced by cameras for parking more than 3 hours. Do not park on
the main Silver Street Car Parks for this reason.

By public transport there is a bus service from Walsall (394) every 20 minutes.
Traveline 0871 200 22 33.

On entering Brownhills from the North you will encounter an enormous silver
metallic statue of a miner (junction of A452, A4124 and B4155). Proceed
south into High Street (straight on) and after approximately 100 yards turn
left
into Church Road where there are two free unrestricted car parks. (These are
signed in the High Street).

We will depart from Church Road Car Park promptly at 10.00 a.m. to follow
canals and other footpaths along the Wyrley and Essington Canal and the
Anglesey Branch to Chasewater. It is easy walking with a good surface and at
least three possible refreshment stops, but I strongly recommend that you
bring sandwiches.

It is possible to do a mid point return from Chasewater Visitor Centre via Pool
Road, a short section of Watling Street and The Parade through Holland Park
to return to the centre of Brownhills. This would be about 4½ / 5 miles.

>From Chasewater I propose walking on to the Cannock Extension Canal and
back to Brownhills. The total distance would be 8½ / 9 miles. I anticipate
the
return will be about 3.30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

As always I recommend stout shoes or boots and waterproofs.

Please ring me on the Friday evening, 9th April between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. if
you intend to come on Tel. No. 01384 294131. Please leave a message on
the answer phone if I am not available. I look forward to seeing you.

Ian McKim Thompson.

Next time out - 5th June, 2010 Caldon Canal
