Join and do a search (crap search facility) on the Canal World Forum because 
this very thing on VDO rev-counters. In fact mine does it.

The advise was that a small ribbon cable gradually develops a bad contact with 
the glass at the back of the hour-meter disply so you need to strip the meter 
and deal with it. There are two sorts each different.
