Or perhaps a visit down the Runcorn Arm where you can view the remains of the
two sets of locks down to the docks, peruse (from outside anyway) the
Manchester Ship Canal lock gate workshops, cross the bridge into Widnes and go
the Chemical Industry Museum (which I believe to be a bit more interesting than
it sounds) and whilst you are there walk down to Spike Island where the Sankey
canal locks down into the river and walk round the nature reserve. As you leave
Runcorn of course, there's always Norton Priory and a bit further on the
village of Daresbury (of Charles Dodsgson (Alice in Wonderland) fame.
On the way to Manchester you will pass close to Dunham Massey with it's deer
park.
Once on the L & L at Red Lion bridge (where the new marina is) there are
regular buses into Southport (Lord St, shopping, 6 golf courses etc).
