Many people fit some kind of diffuser over the pontil (the centre of the bullseye) purely because of this problem. I have seen a blob of Blutack suggested, or just a lace 'curtain' (usually crocheted) - so long as it interferes with the light before the focal length is reached.

No chance it was down to anything ther than the, evening, sun - but it made me very aware of how much hese lights can focus sunlight, and how hot the focal point can get :-( I'd guess that most people will not experience this effect, unless - ike me - they have something quite close to the roof light .. but its ertainly worth checking out.
