I find this all very confusing when trying to work out exactly what
rates of duty I am paying when I buy red diesel....

Over the winter I was buying 'red' from a local garage - and paying
under 70p a litre for it.

The other day I bought fuel at Willowtree and 96.53 litres came to a
(not so) grand total of £92.66.

OK, I do appreciate that they needed to make a profit on their nominal
£0.71p per litre, also that their turnover is not going to be a great as
a garage with good passing trade - but on an 80/20 split the additional
duty came to another 22% over what I had previously been paying (and
there was still that extra 5% of VAT added on top which I've not
included...)

I'm not saying that I've been *done* (although I might have been ..
ignorance is occasionally a blessing .. lol ..!), just that I don't
understand how it is all worked out :-(

Please - can somebody put me out of my misery?
