He's only winding us up, John. Probably.
I can't see BW effectively writing off the £25m+ lottery win they spent on the
K&A post re-opening when there are so many canal businesses which depend on the
waterway remaining complete. Not to mention the fact that the Minister
responsible for waterways has a great chunk of the K&A in his constituency. I
don't know much about BW's accounting practices, but I would be amazed if they
don't have a contingency sum for events like this week's gate failure on Caen
Hill. That flight may be a maintenance headache, but it is also heavily
promoted as one of the 7 wonders of the UK waterways. I imagine there is also
a backlog of repairs arising at least in part from the constraint on last
winter's stoppages when for much of the time the area was frozen and
engineering thus impossible. I don't think we should read too much into the
government's posturing at this stage.
Once 'Sanity Again' has done the K&A - or at east as much as is possible for
the crew's programme, Bruce'll change his mind.
