I can't see BW effectively writing off the £25m+ lottery win they spent on the 
K&A post re-opening when there are so many canal businesses which depend on the 
waterway remaining complete.  Not to mention the fact that the Minister 
responsible for waterways has a great chunk of the K&A in his constituency.  I 
don't know much about BW's accounting practices, but I would be amazed if they 
don't have a contingency sum for events like this week's gate failure on Caen 
Hill.  That flight may be a maintenance headache, but it is also heavily 
promoted as one of the 7 wonders of the UK waterways.  I imagine there is also 
a backlog of repairs arising at least in part from the constraint on last 
winter's stoppages when for much of the time the area was frozen and 
engineering thus impossible.  I don't think we should read too much into the 
government's posturing at this stage.

Once 'Sanity Again' has done the K&A - or at east as much as is possible for 
the crew's programme, Bruce'll change his mind.
