..it pours :-( Having been stuck in a very pretty, but shop-less, village called 'Wadenhoe' - ever since the EA declared their 'Strong Stream Advice' on the River Nene last Monday (and put a stop to navigation by backing the next lock downstream) because of the recent heavy rains hereabouts - and which has also been exacerbated by the new moon/spring tides in the Wash - I had a call this morning telling me that my older sister passed away an hour earlier. As I'm her NOK, receiver, and also her executor, it looks as if I'm going to be doing a lot of travelling over the coming weeks.
It has all come as a bit of a surprise; she has not been 'well' for many years and so she lived in a special home down in Whitchurch (the Hampshire one), but now it looks as if I'm going to have to abandon 'Wyrd' again - this time on a river with fluctuating depths, between a 'locked' lock and a low bridge. Thursday night saw the water over the edge of the bank so I was up every hour to check that we were still in (or 'on'!) the river (I've now put a couple of poles out, fore and aft, to keep 'Wyrd' away from the bank and I've also considered laying the anchor out as the only decent mooring, with reasonable access, that I found available at the time (the rain was coming across the river in 'stair rods') was on the outside of a bend, and is thus in the stream, complete with a multitude of mini whirlpools shooting past). The only good news on the horizon seems to be that the rain is going away but the latest news from the local EA line manager is that there will be no changes to the flood prevention precautions until the situation is reviewed on Tuesday morning; this is a problem in itself as I needed to catch the morning bus into the closest town I can hire a car from (only two buses a day to Peterborough pass through this place!).
