FWIW this appears to be a qemu issue (didn't happen with older qemu's,
doesn't happen with newer ones),  It's sending out a fault which is
reserved by intel... I haven't been able to track down the origin of
this in the affected qemu versions.  qemu doesn't even have this one
in their list of exceptions.  thus given this dubious nature i'm a bit
skeptical of working around a qemu bug and if this is appropriate
should we get it on hardware
