It seems you see what I was thinking. In fact, the hospital I am consulting for would like me to build a customized research module into care2x for this purpose. I have not yet hired a coder, but I hope if I sign the contract to do so next month.
They would like to be able to see (among other things):
1) Number of in/out patients in a given period of time
2) Number of diagnosed cases of certain illness in given period of time
3) Amount of people with given illness treated with certain medication and with what results and so forth
Some of the things they want to know would be useful for a pharmaceutical company (nice to see you had same idea, so I know I wasn't way off). Example when a medicine is used for an illness how many recover, what recovery times, what % of cases were treated with another drug, what were recovery times with them. Such data would be very valueble. If care2x had its hands on such data in many countries we wowuld have a very braod spectrum. It would cover all classes of life (from 3rd world countries to first world), poor to rich and so forth, also from different types of environments and so forth. It would become a very broad based research.
Of course, the downside is we need logic. Building a mechanism for a simple search on categories already in database is a start, but then we need a place to collect it, and a way to categorize countries.
A whole other can of worms is opened when we want to make money out of it, we need to find someone to buy it. Who of us has time to canvas pharmaceutical companies?
Another idea just hit me, could not medical area companies write articles that we place in the main page new section. This would be much as advertising. But it would allow valueble information to doctors, while allowing medical companies to pay to get straight to hospital. We only need to make a "pull" system into one of the news boxes.
OK enough said.

TimS

Dear Tim,
The use of data can be really a good model.
Lets look at it this way :
(i) All pharma companies need pharmacological research (I mean the effect of their medicines/...)
(ii) They do spend a lot of money doing this research.
Its not a bad idea for them to use the data. But this may not be able to fund entire cost. Another idea is :
(i) If there is paid delivery of services, charge a small fee (you need to be really good at costing & pricing of BOO/T, build own operate/transfer projects) per transaction from the customer.
(ii) A lot of reasearch work is done in medicine by various organisations and individuals, the data can be useful for them.
How ever, the data is utilisable only if you can run a very intelligent pattern recognition software. You could plot it on a GIS and make use of other geographical parameters to match against type of ground water/soil type/.......
Another thing which can be done is : the drug prescription module can first show up medicines from the funding pharma company to help the funding.
We have been looking at such models espcially for funding govt projects. Do let me know if you can think of any other models.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.
