The High Cost of Handhelds DECEMBER 16, 2002 (COMPUTERWORLD) - Gartner Inc. has a reputation for IT cost models that many IT managers find excessively high. But Gartner's most recent numbers for the total cost of ownership (TCO) of handheld computers could take some IT managers' breath away.
One must be careful about all that comes from Gartner on the subjects of trends of proprietary vs. open source software, but also on matters of TCO or ROI (return on investment).
Their main client is Microsoft.
So I guess that their main business is downplaying all that keeps good all windows from running over all those good all desktops.
A full blown desktop with Windows, Office and all is a considerable better deal than a much more limited PDA. How may times did you updated software on a Windows desktop? And in a PDA?
As side note should be noted that are already many PDA, even among those that were born as Windows CE, that will gladly accept free operating operating systems and software (Linux, among others).
