We're seeing nothing like this. Authentication is almost instantaneous from the user's perspective on our setup under moderate load. If you want a reasonable basis for comparison, configure the VT JMeter test attached to http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/CASUM/Apache+JMeter for your environment and run it. We were able to get a throughput approaching 3000 requests/minute on our setup.
