We use Riak (basho.com) for tgt's and st's in our 10 active node CAS cluster. I set an expiration on keys in those two buckets and disable the registry cleaner. Other than the small headache of maintaining mods to cas-core to remove all the "final" modifiers so I can (de)serialize tickets, it's been extremely smooth sailing for us.

The point about virtualization pretty much invalidates the argument about active-active setups making more efficient use of resources. The use of Terracotta underneath a distributed Ehcache instance is the showstopper for me. It smelled of magic and mystery in my brief experience with it, which are smells I associate with headaches in production. I'm heavily leaning toward memcached. (Sans repcache if it matters.)
