Maybe adopting JodaTime would give CAS a good way to model durations? We've been getting a huge amount of value out of using this library in uPortal.
It's worth clarifying that JSR-310 was inspired, if not based, largely on JodaTime. While I'd be happy using the Period class, which models the concept of duration Jen mentioned, from either library, it really looks like the future of time in Java is JSR-310.
