I've since discovered that it may be very useful to extend the 
RadiusAuthenticationHandler and the JRadiusServerImpl classes instead. The 
RadiusAuthenticationHandler authenticateUsernamePasswordInternal() method has 
shown me the way (I just need to extend the if-statement to retrieve any of the 
other attributes returned, which are stored by the modified JRadiusServerImpl 
class. 

We're getting somewhere. :-)
