Thanks - and yes, I thought I did indicate that all CAS/Spring files were
properly set to UTF-8 encoding.

We will retest the use of the asterisk to be sure we are able to use it.
 At each instance we used it, I was failing at authentication.  Upon
changing it to another character, authentication was successful.  However,
since several aspects of the configuration were being tested around that
same time, it's wise to retest.

Thanks again for verifying the lack of limitations in CAS.
