I don't know what documentation you're reading, but you can do everything Ellucian wants with a standard install of CAS. We have been running SSO Manager, Luminis, and XE stuff against CAS for a long time. The only "custom" work we did was add the UDC_IDENTIFIER attribute they wanted.
