You can easily map an authentication handler to the execution of a resolver by 
using an alternate authentication manager.  We provide some with CAS though I 
don't have the link handy.  

Recent versions of Spring Security support the SAML assertion returned by CAS. 
I don't know how well that support is integrated with any Grails plugins.

I looked at the SAML specification and I agree it seems the most promising (and 
reasonably documented) of the all. Unfortunately, there's no way I could 
generate dynamic attributes tied to handlers/credentials. Moreover I'm using 
grails acegi plugin which doesnt support SAML validation currently. Sigh!
