I believe JPA2 has dramatically closed the gap with provider-specific features. More to the point, we're not doing anything fancy in RegisteredServiceImpl that couldn't be done with features in the 1.0 spec. On the other hand, while I think it would be neat to be provider independent, I don't think we could or would support anything other than Hibernate.
