These are difficult kinds of errors to track down. I'd recommend evaluating logs on the CAS server to see if it appears heavily loaded; this may be a symptom of normal behavior for system under load. The only remedy in that case is increasing socket timeouts on the client, and I'm not sure off the top of my head we expose handles to do that on the client. In any case that would be treating the symptom instead of the sickness. If there's no evidence of load and your CAS server seems responsive generally, it's probably time to do some packet captures on the client to see exactly what's going on at the TCP layer.
