I'm afraid that is not an option, since usage of Ubuntu 20.04 presents a
security risk after it will reach end of life this May. For now, though, I have
managed to bypass the OS version check in the Model Composer launch script and
successfully build Tutorial 1 for the RFSoC 4x2 board. With that said, it would
be good to know why that check was in place in case there's a chance of running
into compatibility issues later on. If anyone has successfully used Casper on
RHEL8, please let me know the approach you took.

Hi,

I've been working on the same branch using Ubuntu 20.04, and I highly recommend
using the virtualized image provided by Andrew Martens. Before trying this,
make sure you have all the licenses for Matlab and Vivado (Vivado requieres
multiple licenses). Check if startsg.local is properly configurated and package
dependencies met from requirements.txt.

For additional context:

You can download the virtualized image here:

A few tips:

Some blocks migth give you problems. For instance, creating an FFT from scratch
may not work, but FFTs from example files function correctly.

The RFDC block from downloaded example designs may cause an error when opening.
Restarting the program and replacing it with a new instance resolves the issue
for me.

Vivado runs in the background, and depending on the complexity of your design,
it may require more RAM than initially expected.

Changing the file name to the .slx has been known to cause issues.

Hope this helps, Emiliano.

Subject: [casper] Casper development for RFSoC 4x2 on RHEL8

Hi all,

I’m working on building the toolchain for using the Casper libraries on an
RFSoC 4x2 board and am following the instructions given here:

https://casper-toolflow.readthedocs.io/projects/tutorials/en/latest/tutorials/rfsoc/tut_getting_started.html

However, currently my startsg launch script terminates when attempting to
launch Model Composer, and I receive the following error message:

“ERROR: Currently Vitis Model Composer is not supported on RHEL8 and beyond
versions”

The message makes sense given that my operating system is RHEL8.10, but in the
instructions page given above it mentions that the toolchain was tested on
RHEL8.4. Has anyone gotten the toolchain to work on RHEL8, and are there
special setup instructions for doing so?

Thanks,

Walter
