In your DD, you have specified that you want transaction demarcation to happen 
automatically, right ? I have not played with this for some time, but 
setting <trans-attribute> to 'required' may not be enough ...

In case you really get stuck, switch to manual transaction demarcation, lookup a 
UserTransaction instance from JNDI and use UserTransaction.begin() 
and UserTransaction.commit() to commit your work. If that works, your problem is to be 
found within your configuration.
