Art - I've fed my backstay directly using a tuner, I've also fed the base of the mast with a tuner - sort of kind of like a top hat running about 50 watts. They worked sort of kind of. I actually had decent luck running a dipole up the mast on a halyard but the shrouds cause a lot of interaction. Well let's say I didn't blow the finals in the rig and mast didn't melt. I had decent results mounting an old Hygain vertical on the stern pulpit. Of course at 13 feet it's a bit unwieldy and had to be taken apart when underway - but at anchor it worked pretty well.
