I've got the A4 in my C27 and have a similar problem, yet different smell - gas. I've followed a couple of threads regarding leaking tanks etc, but I'm hoping that my problems are vent related.
On the issue of smelly diesel - I was at the Toronto Boat Show in January and noted that every single Beneteau that was at the show reeked of diesel. Diesel has that ability to really stink - unlike gas... gas is a powerful odour, but it doesn't "stink" like diesel does.
If somebody did a sloppy job changing the fuel filter or bleeding the engine and got diesel slopped around a bit and never cleaned it up that will also smell and once it soaks into something it sort of hangs around - if kept clean and fuel isn't leaking anyplace a diesel shouldn't really smell all that bad.
