Just to confirm what a couple of others have already written, just about a week ago I had a guy go aloft to remove my old headstay so I could take it to a rigger for replacement. He is a member of my club and does rigging and other boat work.
We took the two ends of the spinnaker halyard (could have been the jib) and tied them off at the bow cleats. Naturally, we hardened up on the line before making each end fast.
That arrangement stayed in place until I got my new stay, at which time, the guy went aloft a second time and affixed the new stay. While up there he mounted a new Windex and replaced my light bulbs.
The mast had no problems.
Fair winds,

Do I need to take the boat out of the water to replace the forestay? Is it safe to use a bos'n chair to go up the mast to undo the fittings up there?
