Sure…

It takes longer than you think it will – several full days.

Use that blue 3M masking tape or you’ll be scraping the standard stuff off with a razor blade.

Before you start, wash the channels under the lazarett and port and starboard cockpit lockers, then wipe dry.  Nothing more frustrating that getting to the cockpit, lifting up the seats and looking down at that black crud (and you all know what I’m talking about)

Don’t do it when it’s too hot, it can be a miserable task.

Prepare the surface with very fine wet sandpaper and primer.  Apply the primer as carefully as you would the final coats.

Do buy two quarts of paint, and mix them together before you start to insure an even color.  Yup, I learned the hard way that Interlux actually sells two different shades of
“Hatteras White”

Take off all control lines that you can – no need to have extra clutter to work around.

When taping up the windows do not just do the edges (another mistake I made).  You are bound to drip some paint onto the plexi-glass.  Instead, I’d first tape the edges, then tape plastic over the window to the edges.

On the vertical surfaces I would say either spray if you can or use a foam roller and tip otherwise you’ll get a few drips.

Don’t use too much (your guess is as good as mine) of the non-skid grains.  Once on the deck they are not coming off and too many will attract and hold dirt.  They also shred sponges and mops, but surprisingly don’t bother base feet.

I taped up as much hardware as neatly as I could but still got paint on some.  You could use it for an excuse to swap out a few hinges for new.

Where did you buy the material (grains) you mixed in the paint to make it non-skid?-Ron-C27 #1114

I put the grains in the pain.  You have to stir it pretty often to keep them in suspension.

The same method was used for all surfaces I might step on (the pain was a big motivator).  On the non-skid pattern you can’t even see it, on the smoth surfaces you need to get e few inches from the finish to see it.

Here’s a (huge)  high res picture of the deck, although at the distance it was taken you can’t make out any of the details:

That’s what I was afraid would happen.  Did you put the grains in the paint or sprinkle it on the deck?  What about the coaming and the cockpit areas, did you add it there also, and did it affect the appearance.

YES.  Sorry for shouting, but this is a critical issue.  On my first go round I did not add the anti-skid.  About a week later I motored out during a very thick fog.  Everything was OK until I latter went forward on a now damp deck.  When I stepped on the forward hatch, the one that slopes down, I went down – hard.  It almost knocked me and my back (latissimus dorsi, not bone thank God) was in spasms for a good week.

On the second coat I mixed in some Petit no-skid grains.  Worked great.

The paint I used was Interlux Toplaq.  Wonderful finish.

For those of you who have painted their deck, do you have to add an antiskid compound over the molded antiskid area to keep them from being slick? I need to paint a Catalina 34 I bought that was damaged during Katrina and I am considering options.  What works, what doesn’t?  I am currently considering two part polyurethane coatings.
