Subject: RE: catalina27-talk: Hull Speed

When you throw "canoe" type hulls in the mix, it gets much worse, but beach cats and most other multi-hulls exceed the predictions of any traditional calculation of hull speed without planning. "Fineness" enters into it, and a form with a length over beam of, say 18, just moves through the water with less drag than a length over beam of about 3. The 1.34-1.41 factor in the hull speed equation is partially empirical, although closely related to the bow wave effect, but the equations don't work very well for radically different types of hulls.
