Subject: Re: catalina27-talk: RE: catalina27-Letter removalWhen I had to do the same to Aria (lettering on the transom), I tried the hair dryer and a few different citrus cleaners (I believe that I tried both Goo-Gone and Goof-Off). Nothing worked until I held my breath, said a short prayer, and used acetone. I did it a bit at a time and rinsed often with copious amounts of water for fear of damaging the gel coat, but it did not seem to hurt it (not that it was in great shape to begin with, this is a '76). Any wax finish will be gone, of course.
A few additional comments about this - (1) wear chem-resistant gloves, this won't kill you but it dries out your skin. (2) if you do it with acetone, with the boat in the water, staged from a cheap plastic inflatable, don't. Don't ask.
