David,

I agree KISS is good but there is still room for other perspectives.

1) We leave the pillows and the down comfort on the double bed all
season and only stow the bedding and stack the mattresses at the back of the
cabin in the off season.

2) We have the led cockpit table and floor lighting wired directly to
the main cabin light switch so there's nothing to fiddle with when
delivering drinks or a meal under the stars.

3) The charting GPS is permanently tucked under the instrument pod and
tied directly to the DSC VHF in the nav station and the Autohelm in the pod
and is fully cable of plotting a course and ETA to any DSC distress call
within range. When I pick up the RAM next to the winch pocket I already know
if I'm going to be the first responder or a relay point.

As for a bigger boat, well you can have modern connivances like indoor and
outdoor showers on a dual source water heater, a CNG stove, double insulated
cooler, a very accessible auxiliary tucked under the stairs, an open no
bulkhead cabin, CE Offshore rating, and a host of structural improvements
that negate 90% of the big C27 long term ownership issues all in the same 27
feet.

Oh, And the boat will steer itself to the wind. When out joy riding you
simply trim the sails and the boat will follow (change course to make the
ribbons fly again) with a locked wheel, how simple is that?

People,

Back in the old days when I coached a number of sports I followed the KISS
principle....Keep It Simple Stupid.....I've tried to follow that same idea
when sailing.

1) When I spend the night on the boat, I just throw one or two of the main
cabin cushions on the cabin sole. I would use the quarter berth, but too
much junk to move .

2) I have only the original lights, but I have a number of flashlight tucked
here and there and p;plenty of batteries.

3) I use handhelds when it comes to the radio and GPS. I seldom need to talk
to anyone over the horizon( I do have a Masthead antenna in that event) I
usually just need to yell at the guy next to me to warn him I'm at ramming
speed. The handheld GPS hasn't failed me yet and is fun to use in the car.

As for a bigger boat, the 27 lets me stand when i want to, squat in some
privacy when I need to, has a big enough cockpit to enjoy a few beers with
friends, I own it and not the bank, and I can take it out by myself whenever
I get the chance.

It works for me and ultimately isn't that what it is all about.
